GOJI BERRIES
The Ningxia wolfberry, Lycium barbarum L. is the member of the solanaceae family (nightshade). The botanical group includes a variety of other plants and foods including potatoes, tomatoes, peppers (Capsicum species), eggplant, paprika and tobacco.
There are over 80 different Lycium species worldwide. Only 10 Lycium species exist in China. These include 7 species, 3 varieties, and 35 cultivars that are found throughout Northern China. The most highly esteemed for its medicinal and healing properties is Lycium Barbarum L. AND Lycium Chinese Miller. The rest are considered inferior or second-rate.

Lycium barbarum L is grown only in a small area of northern China near the YOLLOW RIVER, the Ningxia Hui Autonomous region. Native to Ningxia Hui Autonomous region of northern China. Lycium barbarum L. is a small red medicinal berry that is knows as Fructus lycii or wolfberry in the West and Di gu zi, Kei Tzi and Gou qi zi(GOJI) throughout Asia. Lycium Barbarum, known to native Chinese as “GOJI”, has been growing in popularity amongst Westerner for its numerous health benefits. Having been used in traditional Chinese Folk Medicine over 3,000 years, people all over the world are now discovering what only the people of Asia have known.
Lycium barbarum L. has been used as a dietary staple for thousands of years in Northern China where people are known for the longevity.
For most of their long history, the Ningxia people of the west elbow plateau of the YELLOW RIVER have been relatively isolated from the rest of civilization. Nestled in a silt-water valley in Zhongning County in northern China, they have been protected for centuries by deserts and mountains and the enormous landmass of central China, which has shielded them from outside influences and cultures. NINGXIA GOJI contains 18 amino acids, 21 trace minerals, 13% more protein than whole wheat, complete spectrum of antioxidant carotenoids, including beta-carotene (a better source than even carrots) and zeaxanthin, Vitamin C at higher levels than even those found in oranges, Beta-sitosterol, Essential fatty acids. Goji contains astronomical levels of 4 unique bioactive polysaccharides (LBP)-a family of complex carbohydrates bound to proteins that defends the body against illness, pollutants and free radicals. In the mid 1980’s when biochemists at the Ningxia Institute of Nutrition analyzed the Ningxia wolfberry (which is called Goji berry by native Chinese and Lycium barbarum L. by botanists), they found that it was a virtual capsule in the form of a fruit. Over 15 percent protein by weight, the wolfberry contains over 21 essential minerals, 18 amino acids, and substantial amounts of chromium. Levels of vitamins such as thiamin (vitamin B1), niacin (vitamin B3), and vitamin C were extraordinarily high.

The Ningxia Goji has strong activity against the superoxide radical. A 2003 investigation by Chinese Academy of science tested the ability of Ningxia Polysaccharide (LBP) to reverse the effects of aging in three-month female mice who were dosed with a chemical that vastly accelerates the aging process, D-galactose.
